What Happens In Literacy Time
Literacy at this level focuses on developing skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Through songs, multimedia, stories, games and activities skills are developed in all these areas. It is also very important for children to develop positive attitudes to learning and a desire to want to improve their skills. Also of importance in early literacy is for children to develop a love of reading and to enjoy books. We aim to achieve this in the Prep classroom.
When participating in literacy lessons the children in Prep will focus on learning the alphabet and the letters that represent many of the sounds that we hear and see, when we read and write. Learning the sounds that are represented by the letters of the alphabet is a very important skill to have that assists in reading and writing.
When each child is ready they will be given a list of words to learn. They include such words that are used highly in reading and writing.
The Preps will take part in listening to and reading stories through the use of our interactive whiteboard and big books, where children will learn to follow text, use a variety of strategies to assist them in decoding words and to comprehend what they hear and read.
The children begin writing in the Prep classroom by writing their name and drawing pictures. As time moves on and skills are developed the children will begin to label pictures and then begin to write simple sentences. Whilst becoming more confident writing sentences they will begin to use simple punctuation such as full stops and capital letters. Handwriting is an important skill to learn in Prep and in Victoria we use Victorian Modern Cursive. (See below) Pencil grip and development of fine motor skills is an area of development for the Prep children that will assist them in their handwriting.

The children in Prep learn the importance of listening and develop the confidence in sharing stories and contributing ideas. They learn how to ask questions, self-correct and rephrase when their message is unclear. In the Prep classroom we share our work, play games in pairs and groups, discuss our ideas and thoughts about topics, play and solve problems together which all develop our ability to speak and listen.
Term 1
We will begin by teaching children the letter name and their most basic common sound. We will use a multisensory approach where by the children hear, see and feel each letter. They will listen and reproduce the sound, read the letter they see and use sand, playdough or a pencil to feel the writing of that letter. We will introduce the Preps to all the letters and their sounds this term, and as the term and year progresses the program will be differentiated so that children are learning at their point of need.

We will be spending some time working on understanding and retelling stories. We will read and view picture books and short films. We want the children to identify characters, settings and retelling the beginning, middle and end.
The words we would like the children to become more aware of and learn to read and spell confidently are:
Super Owl Words. These will be given to children when they know at least 90-95% of their letter sounds.
During this term the children are learning about rhyming words and syllables. They are identifying sounds in words that they hear and learning what these sounds look like.
